Linux on AM5 B850 Mainboards: A Pleasant Surprise
My Linux installation on an ASRock B850 A Pro Wifi mainboard worked surprisingly well. Despite a lack of officially stated Linux support, key features like Wi-Fi, storage, and dual video cards work flawlessly.
I'm thrilled to report that the ASRock AM5 B850 A Pro Wifi mainboard works flawlessly with the recent 6.14 Linux kernel, found in Fedora 41 and 42, and Ubuntu 25. Despite ASRock not listing Linux as an officially supported OS for this mainboard, almost everything you could expect from it works seamlessly.
The onboard M.2 wifi module is a standout feature, working out of the box with the 6.14 kernel and connecting to both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN. I didn't test 6 GHz WLAN, but Bluetooth support is also present, although I didn't test any actual connections. The ease of use is a significant improvement over my previous experiences with Linux-compatible wifi hardware.
The mainboard's storage connectors also work very well. I tested successfully with three M.2 SSD slots used in parallel, along with two SATA-connected HDDs. I tested this with Samsung EVO-990 Plus, Crucial P3, Western Digital in the M.2/2280 slots, and 1 TB and 2 TB HDDs connected through SATA, and the system recognized and mounted them all without any issues.
The AMD 8500G CPU/APU and its built-in video card work fine, providing a smooth user experience under KDE/Wayland. When I installed an Nvidia GeForce GTX960 in the PCIe slot, it was recognized instantly by the open-source "nouveau" driver that comes with Fedora and Ubuntu. The internal and external video cards can work in parallel, each connected to a different monitor.
A Welcome Change from Past Wifi Woes

Historically, finding Linux-compatible 5-GHz wifi hardware has been a challenge. My previous AM4 mainboard's M.2 wifi module remained uncooperative for over five years, despite trying the latest kernels and separate drivers. I resorted to using three USB-based wifi dongles: one as a fallback that worked with every Linux kernel but only supported 2.4 GHz WLAN, a "Planex GW-450D KATANA" that worked intermittently after compiling a dedicated driver, and a two-antenna dongle that worked better out of the box but still had issues. The ASRock AM5 B850 A Pro Wifi's onboard M.2 wifi module working instantly is a significant improvement.
Dual Video Cards: A Seamless Experience
When using both the AMD 8500G's built-in video card and the Nvidia GeForce GTX960, Linux enabled both automatically during the Fedora installation and when booting into the installed system. The system was configured as a dual-monitor setup, with each video card connected to a different input on my monitor (HDMI1 and DisplayPort). I could switch between the two inputs manually, and both KDE and Gnome's graphical display configuration tools allowed me to disable one or both video cards, or configure them as a dual-monitor setup.
